actually talking
Voice Acting
And then they spoke...
It is kind of ironic because when going into this class, I figured that we would simply start off with acting activities that involved speaking. Now that we are used to acting without speaking, it is intimidating and nerve-racking to go up in front of the class and speak...even though we talk to each other when not acting. It is funny how something that we do all the time can be so challenging (which goes along with my blog from last week).

Rocket Ship and Talking
As for the talking which I see people liek to talk about, I would have to say that not talking certainly makes you think more about how your body works and operates during a scenario. It would seem easier to just say something, but it probably would not appear to be real. Body movements probably are a lot closer to what you would do if it was real. I think this is probably the main reason that we don't start talking in the beginning because hardly any of it would seem real.

Reasons We Don't Start Out Speaking
Speaking is, of course, an important aspect of acting...but it is most certainly not the only aspect. If fact, dialogue can just be distracting when you are trying to portray something. To be able to portray what you are saying, it is important to first focus on what you are doing. You can go up on stage and say the line "I feel sad." but is that what your body language is showing? If not, you won't be very convincing. First, it is important to realize what you are doing physically and whether or not you are really portraying the emotion of what you are doing through your actions. Once this becomes a bit easier to realize, then adding some sort of dialogue will be easier because you will be thinking about the emotion rather than just reading off a page and sounding fake.

why
You guys are doing great on the blog, but let me remind you, like it says on your syllabus, it is not enough to say you liked something. You have to explain why. If you do not, I can't give you credit for a post.
That being said, see that you are thinking about the lessons that our exercises teach especially the less obvious and, ironically, more important ones.
Keep it up.

Usefulness
I think that kids would respond really well to a lot of the things that we are doing. Since I am a music ed. major, I could definitly see using Wiz-Bang or The Human Machine activity in a classroom.
Stereotyping
I was only six years old during this activity. When I was running around the bench and constantly moving, I felt like I was "over-acting" in a sense because of what we have been practicing in this class. We have been taught that less is more. That is why I felt like I did too much, however in reality, I did what a young child really would do. I liked this activity overall because it was interesting, fun, and definitely entertaining.

And the activity dealing with the age was comical. It would have been funny to see four people at the age of 85-99 all on the same stage and only having two people able to sit down on the bench.

Difficulty with Small Objects
It is funny how much you really have to concentrate to do this exercise. There is a whole lot more detail than it seems and you really have to focus. It is definitely a good challenge!

The activity with the noises was rather interesting. I have no idea what that accomplished other than making people more comfortable around one another. It just seemed like we all were making weird noises and acting like we would not in public.

The human machine exercises are fun, if a bit strange. It is really interesting in class to see all the weird things that people come up with. It is also interesting how people build off one another and the games take on a life of thier own.

Problem Solving (No Hands)
The acting exercise where the other group had to mirror what we were doing is probably the hardest exercise yet. Without knowing what someone is trying to accomplish, it makes it very awkward to predict what the next type of move would be.

Thinking outside the box
Also, after just these first few classes I already notice myself becoming more comfortable with the activities and exercises that we're doing. At first I felt completely ridiculous when I had to get up in front of everyone but on Tuesday I was playing an imaginary volleyball game with a referee and everything and a sunbather in the background and I felt totally comfortable.
Mirror Exercise
The O C
Acting
I also agree that the mirror exercises are harder than they look. When we had to do it without a leader it made it even harder. I never knew rather she was going to move or if I should so I hesitated a lot. I also really enjoyed the exercises when people had to join in. I honestly didn't think it would turn out to be fun like it did. I never realized until this class how important little details are in acting. For example when I "walked" into the bookshelf because I didn't really pay attention to where the others "placed it". Also when we were doing the joining in exercises by adding a simple detail you could set the entire scene. As I said before i didn't realize how important the little details were.
Creativity
The Real World
I feel like I learned so much already that would not have crossed my mind if someone did not point it out to me. For instance, when holding an imaginary fork or rope...my fingers/hands can not be pressed together or it does not look realistic. I am looking forward to seeing how much everyone in class progresses and improves throughout this semester. And I am really enjoying being able to take a course different from all my other classes.

Leadership
Acting and Such
I feel that taking this class was a really good decision for me. I have done a little bit of acting (high school shows, community theater, etc.) in the past but I have never actually taking an acting class. It is really interesting to me to use what I have learned from the past and to combine it with the new things that I am learning. I think this class will help me grow as an actress and will definitely help me should I decide to do any more shows in the future.

Degree of Difficulty
Acting
Acting
I agree with everyone that acting is a lot harder than i thought. Like Fabio says you have to actually live that moment in order for people to believe you. And that is a very difficult task for me. I can think of the moment and how it went/goes but its hard to actually "live" the event. I also agree that with the use of props it would make it easier. When we had to act like we were playing tug-a-war it would have been much easier to do. Another example of this would be when we had to act like we were eating. We didn't have any props but the table and it was hard enough but it would have made it even more difficult if the table wasn't there. Overall so far i have grown to respect people who do acting for a living because it is hard work and takes a lot of time.
Acting
A New Respect For Actors
Lately when I'm watching TV or a movie I think of how the actors are just standing there in front of dozens of cameras and crew people and it amazes me how real they make everything seem. I can't even pretend to play tug of war in front of a group of 20 some people with out cameras, I can't imagine doing more serious involved things in front of all the people on set while filming for TV or a movie.

Television Acting
Although I have been in a few plays a long, long time ago (youth group in church maybe when I was ten), it seems like it is a lot harder that I remember. Maybe when I was younger I was able to imagine things better. In those plays though, I did get to use props which I think might make acting a little easier if there is an item to actually look at.

Watching a Movie
I watched What Happens in Vegas this weekend. This was my first movie I have watched since being in Acting for Non-Majors. I found myself watching the actors more closely because of this class. I was amazed how easy they made acting looking. I have realized that acting is not easy! I need a lot more practice at making the actions I am acting out realistic. I never really thought about the difficulty of acting until I took this class. I believed every single action the actors were doing. I was paying attention to their facial expressions. Cameron Diaz was making excellent facial expressions that were believable. One thing I realized was that I have only seen Ashton Kutcher do one “type” of acting. He always is the quirky character who is always joking around. I would like to see him play another role in a movie!

Observing Someone Eating
Eating
I watch a group of four girls eating dinner. The first thing i noticed was one of the girls would put her fork down after every bite. Also another girl would wipe her face after every bite. And the last girl kind of shoved her food into her mouth. I did notice that all the girls talked a lot while eating. It seemed as though one girl would talk as the others were eating and once she was done another would strike up a conversation while the others ate. So it seemed to switch roles so that it gave them time to eat as well. I also noticed that all the girls did lean over their plates while they ate. So i noticed a lot of different things within the five minutes of watching them eat.
View eating at convo
This assignment was completed during my lunch today. Over to my left about 11 o'clock angle, there were three ladies having their lunch together. Throughout most of the time the ladies ate quietly using very little movement while eating. 2 out of 3 of the ladies were sitting with their legs cross while the other young lady sat on her left leg throughout lunch. they were sitting straight up in their chairs, all using their right hand to feed themselves, so their left side of the body had very little or no action while they ate. Conversation did not pick up their pace as far as body language is concerned. As the young ladies continued to enjoy each other’s company and fine meal, one could sense they are a close knit group of friends, simply by enjoying each other’s presence, they had over five minutes of complete comfortable silence. Once they started to talk to each other had their own turn to talk, they never talk over each other, it seemed as if they were actively listening to one another.

Seeing and Listening
Watching & Listening
I listened by my window facing the quad during a quiet time of the day, hearing people walking outside, the wind after I turned my fan off, and sounds of televisions and people in the hallway, both of which sound much different than if you are in the same room. It was interesting to me how much sensory information is ignored so easily when I am not paying attention.

Seeing and Listening
For this part of the assignment i decided to watch a group play billiards at the rec center while i worked. The first thing that i noticed was in between each hit they would have a quick conversation. Also they all had a different way of hitting the ball. One of the guys would practice a couple 'hits' before he actually hit, the other guy would always use the blue chalk before every hit, and the last guy would stand there and look at the table for ever to decided what he was going to do. Lastly i noticed that only one of the guys really had any reaction to rather he missed it or not. Whereas the other two guys didn't seemed bothered rather the made it or not.
Listening
For this part of the assignment i decided to listening outside on my aunts patio while i was reading. It is amazing how many different sounds i actually heard when i took the time to stop and just listen. I could hear the radio from inside the house and my aunt vacuuming the floor. Also i could hear children at the park playing and their skateboards rolling down the sidewalk. You could also hear cars on the road and dogs barking. And lastly i heard birds also. So there was a lot of different things that i heard while sitting outside, when i actually took the time to just listen.
Seeing and Listening assignment
the "listening task" took place at the "convo" dining hall during my breakfast time. after getting my food and sitting in front of the milk and juice bar, back facing the grill, i listen to the many different TVs going on at once such as the news channel on one, sports on the others, cartoons on another set. I heard groups of spread out people talking different conversations, hearing people in the back of the kitchen preparing the food , washing dishes, i heard the young lady at the front door on the north side of the dining hall greeting people as they walk in ready to eat. i heard forks and spoons hitting the plates as people wolfed down their food, i heard one guy burr, i also heard the staff sitting at the table engaging conversations about plans for the weekend.
For my seeing exercise, I sat in a chair at the rec center and watched two boys playing basketball. If I were just walking by I would not have noticed all of the body language and the actions that I noticed. At first the boys were just taking turns shooting around; they were moving slow and playing leisurely. After a couple minutes, they noticed that I was looking at them and they picked up their game and played a little one-on-one. They then began to dunk the ball and grab the rim. After they noticed someone was watching they became more active and began to show off. This was subtle, if I was not watching them specifically I would not have even noticed. I think its interesting how behavior changes when you know someone is looking at you.
-Listening-
My listening activity I choose to sit in my living room at home. I could hear many sounds here. I heard the sounds of 'That 70's Show' playing on the television along with frantic tapping on a keyboard as my dad finished up his homework for the week. The front windows were open, so I could hear cars buzzing past the house. There was a faint train whistle in the background and cherping birds outside. I was surprised by the surplus of noise I heard in a mere five minutes. It seemed to be a relaxing afternoon, but there was so much going on that I never really noticed before. This exercise made me much more aware of my surroundings.
Seeing/Listening
For the "seeing" part of this activity, I decided to just watch people walk around campus in between classes. As Dr. Vanata said in Wellness class two years ago, our generation is hooked up to their gadgets 24/7, and he turns out to be right again... For starters, if someone is walking alone, there was a good chance that he or she would have on either an ipod or be texting/talking on the cell phone. There was only a few exceptions to that I saw and most of the time it was because that individual was smoking a cigarette. The other observation I made dealt with the speed that people walked. If there was a group of individuals walking, it was like watching an ant move in slow motion. When there was only one or two people together, it seemed that they were moving faster either to get to class or just because they only had to keep up with one other person. As a side note, a squirrel sat there and eat his lunch less than a yard from me while this all was going on and did not move at all for about five minutes. Usually they seem to be more jumpy?
Listening
For listening, I decided that I would pay attention to the noises that my room has in it when no one is talking. It is amazing how a low fan that pivots can make so much noise. Outside of the usual noise a fan makes, there is a little knob on the top that spins around and seems to make a grinding noise. And because of the fan blowing the air towards the waste basket, the plastic bag makes the ruffling noise (which I hardly ever paid any attention to). If I pay close enough attention, I can hear the room beside me through the paper thin wall here in Jacobs. They either are in love with Jerry Springer, or there just is not anything else on daytime television.
